chapter I

"Tell me your happiest memory."

The soft electric buzz, prickling her shivering, sweaty skin, palpitates like a soft second pulse. She can't see. The blindfold is tight around her eyes, soaked in tears, sweat and a little blood. The man's softly flat monotone voice again.

"Tell me your happiest memory."

The electric buzz is louder this time. Her arm involuntarily twitches and contracts. The blood rushes to her face as she manages a hoarse whisper, "I don't know what you want." Bloody tears stream down her face.

"I know. The irony of your predicament. Here you are, strapped to wires, blindfolded, and someone is asking you for your happiest memory. Yes, I know it seems odd. But trust me, it will all make sense."

The electric buzz is no longer a buzz but a spiking current, coursing down her spine, through her fingertips, pulling at her jawbone and forcing her to spit out, "What do you want me to say?"

"Tell me your happiest memory. I already know your most terrible one."

"Stop the machine. Stop the machine."

Her heart fluttered, sparks.
